Katsuō-ji stands as a beacon for an excellent day trip from Osaka. Known for it’s fall foliage and thousands of Daruma. The temple is centuries old, has been rebuilt several times, and has a very charming atmosphere. The temple belongs to the Kōyasan Shingon-shū sect of Japanese Buddhism and is a popular stop for pilgrims and tourists alike.
The Daruma Dolls!

The temple grounds are home to thousands of Daruma, and they really are everywhere! Most placed by tourists around the temple grounds. Some have creatively been turned into little shapes! Some have fallen into the temple’s pond and foliage, but no matter where you look while you are near the temple you will always find a new creatively-placed Daruma! These little wooden dolls can be purchased from the shrine for 500¥ (Around $3.20 USD as of 02/2026) and also come with a small fortune. There is a QR code on the fortune with a link to various languages. There are also even larger Daruma available to purchase (Some you would not be able to fit in your suitcase!) so have no fear your perfect Daruma Doll is out there.
After receiving your Daruma you offer a small prayer to the main shrine. You bathe your Daruma in the smoke of the incense burning in front of the shrine, then it’s time to write your wish on it’s back & base, and place the little guy somewhere that speaks to you! (Just don’t trespass or find somewhere off-limits to place the Daruma)

How to get to Katsuō-ji?
Fortunately, getting there is quite easy! You will need to take the Midosuji Subway line all the way to final stop at Minoh-Kayano station. From there you will exit the station and transfer to bus no.8 (The buses are right outside the train station, can’t miss them!) This should take you directly to the temple’s front gate. There is a 500 Yen entrance fee, but it comes with a postcard for you to complete a stamp rally as you make your way through the temple. The last bus leaves from Minoh-Kayano station at 3PM and the last return bus from Katsuō-ji back to the train station leaves around 4-5PM so be careful not to miss it! It’s a long (but beautiful) walk back down the mountain.

Conclusion
Katsuō-ji is located on a mountain that has clean air, a calm atmosphere, and beautiful natural surroundings. Take some time to clear your head and appreciate all that is around you. It’s usually most busy around the fall season, and I would recommend getting there early to beat the crowds. They have a Go-shuin available as a wonderful souvenir of your visit. Have fun hanging out with all the Daruma!
